Fireworks 2008

ImageMark your calendars Hoganites!  The 2008 Hogan fireworks show is scheduled for Saturday June 28th.  If you have never seen the fireworks over Hogan you need to make it a point not to miss this year’s display.  As always we would like to thank the USACE for all of their hard work to put this show together year in and year out.

Back on the water!

With spring fever growing in our household I decided, actually it was the kids harassing me DAILY, to get the boat ready and spend a day out on the lake.  I got the boat tuned up and cleaned out from its winter storage in my side yard and gathered the family to spend Saturday (4/14/2008) out on the water.

We could not have picked a more beautiful day!  It was a wonderful 85ish degree day and the water was a nice refreshingly cool 60 degrees.  60 degree water, by the way, is perfect for tossing your unsuspecting kids off of the tube and into the water.  We spent the morning cruising around and taking in all of the green hillsides and wildflowers that are everywhere around the lake this time of year.  We threw a couple of kids on the tubes and cruised on over to Goose Egg Island where we beached for some lunch and a swim.  The water is pretty low right now so the small island has actually turned into 2 medium islands connected by a small piece of land that made a perfect beach!  After lunch it was back to throwing kids off of the tubes in the middle of the lake.

If you have not been out to the lake yet this year you better get going soon.  The weather is perfect and the water is great if not a little chilly but very bearable for you water sport enthusiasts.  The fishing is looking good as well; we passed several boats pulling in some nice looking catches.

We are putting together an interactive photo album of the lake and your favorite photos are needed. Do you have pictures of your last camping trip? What about those pictures you got of the last big catch you made?  Send over pictures of your favorite activities and we will get them posted!

Hidden Treasure

Treasure FoundDid you know that there is hidden treasure to be found at Lake Hogan?!  No we are not talking about the usual beauty, wildlife and fun but real live hidden treasure!

Geocaching is a fairly new sport, it started back in 2000, and is great fun for individuals and families alike.  The only thing you need is a handheld GPS unit, which can be had for less than $100 nowadays and a good bit of hunting/seeking skills.  Geacaches are usually a small Tupperware container of trinkets and goodies or a simple log book to sign and date.  Just remember if you take something be sure to leave something!  There are several hidden caches around the lake and they are a great opportunity to get out of the boat/campsite and explore a little bit.

New Record Fish Caught!

Story courtesy of Ledger Dispatch

31-lb. striper a New Hogan recordSeventeen-year-old James Puricelli had the experience of a lifetime on a fishing trip at New Hogan Reservoir, laying waste to the previous record for a striper caught at the lake, besting the old record by nearly 10 pounds.

Puricelli of Shenandoah, Iowa, was here to visit his grandmother Cindee Baier in Ceres. His grandmother's friend thought it would be fun to take him fishing. He called Bruce Hamby of Sierra Sportfishing and booked a trip to catch striper on New Hogan.
